Waste LandfillEXPLANATION

  • Concept

The construction of reinforced earth wall for waste landfill is very sensitive to the environment of that region. This reinforced earth wall is constructed by reinforcing the in-situ soil with high strength geogrid. The inner side of the wall is then covered with the watertight geomembrane to keep contamination within the wall. The outer side of the wall can be vegetated for green appearance.
  • Application

In places where waste landfill and environmental considerations are both needed.
  • Characteristics

    1. The external wall can be vegetated to reduce the impact to the surrounding environment.
    2. It is considered to be a flexible structure that can withstand greater level of settlement and lateral deformation, unlike rigid RC structure that could result in cracks and damages in the same condition.
    3. The landfill can be turned into a park or sport ground after completion.

Waste LandfillCONSTRUCTION PROCESS

  • Excavation

Clean the ground, and establish level lines according to the design drawing. Then excavate and compact the ground.

  • Gulley Installation

Install gulley at the position indicated on the designed drawing.

  • ACEGrid® Laying

Cut ACEGrid® to the size specified on the design drawing. ACEGrid® should be laid flat without any corrugation. Anchorage should be done with the anchorage interval specified on the design drawing.

  • Sand Bag Stacking

Fill the required number of sand bags and cross-stack them to the designed height, forming the wall facing.

  • Backfilling

Backfill soil at the back of the sand bag facing; the thickness of every layer should be between 15 cm to 30 cm. Then, perform compaction from the facing inward to the backfill area to meet the required compactness specified on the design drawing.

  • ACEGrid® Wrap-around

Wrap the sand bag around with the reserved length of ACEGrid®; make sure it is free of corrugation. Anchorage should be done with the anchorage interval specified on the design drawing.

  • Slope Shaping

After anchoring the ACEGrid®, perform backfill and soil compaction again. Use excavator grab or available compactor to compact and shape the slope to requirement.

  • Geomembrane Laying

Lay geomembrane over the bottom of the landfill and the reinforced earth structure for separation and barrier. Weld the geomembrane at the overlap section to ensure water resistance.

  • Completion

    Waste Landfill is completed.

Waste LandfillDemonstrative Case

Landfill and Reinforced Earth Embankment, Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Kaohsiung regional industrial waste treatment plant was insufficient due to the increase of population over the years. Therefore it was in urgent need the expansion of waste treatment plant. The idea was to build the reinforced earth embankment to expand the waste treatment plant. Geomembrane was applied to prevent leakage of sewage, and the surface was planted with greens for beautification. The work area was about seven hectares, the construction took only five months to accomplish, and the operation officially initiated in January 2011.
